Care options in West Windsor
Help for the days, the nights, or both
Some families need a few hours a week. Others want someone there overnight, or living in. Here's what each option looks like at home.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
Any of these can be companion care, which covers company, meals, light housekeeping, errands and rides, or personal care, which adds hands-on help with bathing, dressing and moving around safely. See how live-in care and 24-hour care differ.
The Senior Center bus, and the rides it doesn't make
The West Windsor Senior Center at 271 Clarksville Road serves township residents 55 and older and is open weekdays from 8am to 4pm. Its bus picks members up at the curb for programs, shopping and trips and costs $1 one way or $2 round trip, with PAAD recipients exempt. Rides follow the announced schedule only, with no same-day reservations and no individual rides.
Riders have to walk from the house to the curb and climb the bus's four stairs on their own, and the bus can't carry a wheelchair. The policy lets an adult companion ride along once a request form is filled out. A caregiver can help your mother get to the curb, drive her on the days and to the places the bus doesn't go, and be at home when she gets back. The township also lists its licensed taxi companies and asks residents to use only those.
Classes, screenings and a file for the fridge
The Senior Center's classes include balance and stability, chair yoga, strength training and Tai Chi. It also offers monthly blood pressure screenings, memory screening, a durable medical equipment loan program, a SHIP counselor and AARP tax service from February to April.
The township's File of Life is a red magnetic envelope, about 3 by 5 inches, that holds medications and medical history on a standard form and goes on the front of the refrigerator for responders. The Mercer County Library System's volunteers deliver books, movies and audiobooks free to homebound patrons, generally every two to three weeks, with no medical documentation required. A caregiver is there between all of it, with meals, company and the day's routine.

Questions West Windsor families ask
Who can ride the West Windsor Senior Center bus?
Senior Center members, who must be West Windsor residents 55 or older. Riders have to be able to walk from home to the bus without help and climb its four stairs, and the bus can't carry a wheelchair. A round trip costs $2, and nothing can be booked for the same day. If your father needs more help getting out, a caregiver can go with him.
Can the Senior Center bus take my mother to the doctor?
No. The bus runs on an announced schedule to the Senior Center, shopping and trips, and the policy says no individual rides are provided. A caregiver can drive her to an appointment and stay through the visit.
What is the File of Life in West Windsor?
It's a red plastic envelope with a magnetic strip, about 3 by 5 inches, that holds medications, medical history and other information on a standard form. It goes on the front of the refrigerator so responders to a medical call can see it right away. A caregiver can sit down with your parent and fill out the form.
How do families pay for home care?
Care with Endurance is private pay. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home.
