Care options in Pennington
Help for the days, the nights, or both
Some families need a few hours a week. Others want someone there overnight, or living in. Here's what each option looks like at home.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
Any of these can be companion care, which covers company, meals, light housekeeping, errands and rides, or personal care, which adds hands-on help with bathing, dressing and moving around safely. See how live-in care and 24-hour care differ.
Hopewell Valley Rides, and the days it doesn't run
Hopewell Valley Rides is for Pennington Borough residents who are 60 and over and no longer able to drive. A one-way ride is $8, booked through RideProvide with 48 hours' notice requested, on Monday through Friday only, with no weekend rides. It is limited to 10 one-way rides a month, and anyone who travels with a rider, a caregiver included, has to be registered too. Mercer County's T.R.A.D.E. service goes anywhere in the county, also on weekdays only.
A caregiver covers the rest: a Saturday errand, an appointment that came up yesterday, or a day when your father would simply like someone with him at the visit. She can drive him there and bring him home.
The senior center, meals and books at the door
The Hopewell Valley Senior Center is at 395 Reading Street, with Social Bridge on Mondays from 1:30 to 4:00pm and a free Mahjongg game on Thursdays from 1:30 to 3:30pm. Pennington Borough's website points to Hopewell Township Senior Services for senior programs. Pennington Public Library at 30 North Main Street will drop requested books, audiobooks and movies at the door for anyone who can't get there. Meals on Wheels of Mercer County brings meals once each weekday between 10:30am and 1:00pm to residents 60 and older who need help to leave home or to prepare meals.
Those meals can't be left at the door or in a cooler, so someone needs to be home to take them. A caregiver can be there when the volunteer arrives, put the meal out with the rest of the day's food and help your father get to bridge or mahjongg.
