Care options in Stonington
Help for the days, the nights, or both
Some families need a few hours a week. Others want someone there overnight, or living in. Here's what each option looks like at home.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
Any of these can be companion care, which covers company, meals, light housekeeping, errands and rides, or personal care, which adds hands-on help with bathing, dressing and moving around safely. See how live-in care and 24-hour care differ.
Lunch and a ride at the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center
The Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center, at 27 Chase Street, is a nonprofit food bank and senior center that Stonington helps fund. It provides lunches five days a week: Bingo lunches on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 11, a Speaker Series lunch on Thursdays at noon, and a Senior Salad Social on Fridays at noon. Wellness programs run from yoga stretches to line dancing, and there are caregiver and grief support groups. The center is open weekdays from 9 to 3:30.
Its free door-to-door bus has a lift and is for people over 54 who live in Stonington, Mystic, Pawcatuck and North Stonington. It goes to the center, to medical appointments and to shopping, and your parent registers by phone with the center. A caregiver covers the evenings and weekends the center is closed, and can be in the house when the bus comes.
Human Services, Medicare counseling and the emergency registry
Stonington Senior Services is part of Human Services at 166 South Broad Street, with a Municipal Agent for the Elderly on staff. Human Services has a CHOICES counselor who holds confidential Medicare appointments and makes home visits to residents who are homebound. Social Services can help with State applications such as SNAP and Medicare Savings Programs, and with the Renters' Rebate, by appointment.
The town also keeps a Special Needs Emergency Registry. Enrolling lets police, fire and other first responders prepare for residents who may need extra help, and the information is kept confidential. Human Services closes at 11:30 on Fridays. A caregiver fits around all of it, with the meals, company and daily help in between.

Can someone help us with Medicare in Stonington?
Yes. Stonington Human Services has a CHOICES counselor on staff for personal, confidential appointments about Medicare options, supplemental insurance and Part D drug plans, and home visits are available for residents who are homebound. A caregiver can stay with your father while you attend, or sit in with him.
How do families pay for home care?
Care with Endurance is private pay. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home.
