Home care in Essex
In Essex, the senior center, the hot lunches and the Meals on Wheels all come from The Estuary in Old Saybrook, so a good week for your mother starts with how she gets there and who is home around it. Tell us what's changed, and we'll plan the hours with you.

Does Endurance Home Care provide home care in Essex?
Yes. We provide home care throughout Essex, including Ivoryton and Centerbrook, from our Stamford office. Your family can choose hourly visits, awake overnight care, live-in care or care around the clock, as companion care or personal care with hands-on help. A registered nurse comes to the house first to write the care plan with you, and you meet the caregiver before the first visit.
Care options in Essex
Help for the days, the nights, or both
Some families need a few hours a week. Others want someone there overnight, or living in. Here's what each option looks like at home.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
Any of these can be companion care, which covers company, meals, light housekeeping, errands and rides, or personal care, which adds hands-on help with bathing, dressing and moving around safely. See how live-in care and 24-hour care differ.
The Estuary, and the ride to get there
Essex's Social Services page points residents to The Estuary, a non-profit regional senior center on Main Street in Old Saybrook that serves nine towns, Essex among them. Its Meals on Wheels is delivered Monday to Friday, one to five days a week, hot around noontime, with frozen meals for dinners and weekends. A family member, doctor or visiting nurse can request it, and a medical order isn't needed. Its own FAQ says it isn't an adult daycare center: everyone who takes part is fully independent, and there are no caretakers on site.
To get there, River Valley Transit's Dial-A-Ride serves Essex Monday to Friday from 6:30am to 4:30pm. It is a shared, curb-to-curb ride with a half-hour pickup window, booked by 4:30pm on the business day before and up to two weeks ahead. For medical appointments the Estuary's EMOTS service picks your mother up at home and brings her back, first come, first served, for a fee. A caregiver can fill what neither covers: the hands-on help at home, the ride that has to happen on short notice, and the evenings and weekends.
Town Hall, the library and getting ready for a storm
Essex Social Services at Town Hall, 29 West Avenue, is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from noon to 3pm, and home visits can be requested for people who can't come in. Ivoryton Library offers home delivery to anyone who needs it, arranging a time to drop off or pick up materials. The Assessor's Office takes applications for the State's Circuit Breaker tax relief between February 1 and May 15, and anyone who qualifies is also eligible for the Town of Essex matching benefit.
The Health Department keeps a free, voluntary evacuation registry for residents with medical disabilities or transportation needs, updated every year, and Safer Essex emergency alerts need pre-registration too. A caregiver can help your father sign up for both, then add the daily help around them: breakfast, company through the afternoon, a safe evening routine and a phone update to you if you live far away.

Questions Essex families ask
How far ahead do I book Dial-A-Ride in Essex?
Reservations are due by 4:30pm on the business day before the trip, and you can book up to two weeks ahead. Rides run Monday to Friday from 6:30am to 4:30pm, with a half-hour pickup window. For a doctor's visit, the Estuary's EMOTS rides are first come, first served and charge a fee. When neither fits, a caregiver can drive your parent.
Does The Estuary provide care at home?
The Estuary is a senior center, and it says it isn't an adult daycare center: everyone who takes part is fully independent. It does deliver Meals on Wheels Monday to Friday. A caregiver can be at the house for the rest of the day, helping with meals, getting ready and getting out the door.
What is the Essex evacuation registry?
It is a free, voluntary list kept by the Essex Health Department for residents with medical disabilities or transportation needs, so emergency personnel know who may need help during an evacuation. It is updated every year. A caregiver can help your parent fill out the form and keep it current.
How do families pay for home care?
Care with Endurance is private pay. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home.
