Does Endurance Home Care provide home care in Old Lyme?
Yes. We provide home care throughout Old Lyme from our Stamford office. Your family can choose hourly visits, awake overnight care, live-in care or care around the clock, as companion care or personal care with hands-on help. A registered nurse comes to the house first to write the care plan with you, and you meet the caregiver before the first visit.
Care options in Old Lyme
Help for the days, the nights, or both
Some families need a few hours a week. Others want someone there overnight, or living in. Here's what each option looks like at home.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
Any of these can be companion care, which covers company, meals, light housekeeping, errands and rides, or personal care, which adds hands-on help with bathing, dressing and moving around safely. See how live-in care and 24-hour care differ.
Rides that need to be booked the day before
River Valley Transit's Dial-A-Ride serves Old Lyme with a shared, curb-to-curb ride, and there is no application. It runs Monday to Friday from 6:30am to 4:30pm. Reservations are due by 4:30pm on the business day before the trip, and can be made up to two weeks ahead. You get a half-hour pickup window rather than an exact time. For medical appointments, the Estuary's EMOTS service picks your mother up at home and brings her back, with appointments taken first come, first served and a fee for the service.
Both work well when the plans are set. They are harder when an appointment moves, when she needs someone beside her in the waiting room, or when the day is a weekend. A caregiver can drive, stay through the visit and bring her home, and be there for the hour in the morning before the first ride arrives.
A weekday at the senior center, and the help that reaches the house
The Lymes' Senior Center at 26 Town Woods Road serves people 55 and over with classes, exercise and health programs, lunches and trips. A hot lunch is served there Monday to Friday, and diners reserve by 11am the day before. The town nurse keeps hours at the center Monday to Friday from 10:30am to 12:30pm, and at Memorial Town Hall on Fridays from 9:15 to 10:15am.
Some help comes to the door. Meals on Wheels is delivered Monday to Friday, one to five days a week, with frozen meals for dinners and weekends, and a medical order isn't needed. The Old Lyme Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library lends to homebound residents at no charge. If your father lives alone, the town's Special Needs Registration Form lets emergency workers know he may need help in an emergency, and it has a line for the relative, caregiver or friend to call. A caregiver adds the part in between: breakfast, getting ready for the center, company on the afternoons and evenings it's closed, and a phone update to you if you live far away.

Questions Old Lyme families ask
How far ahead do I book Dial-A-Ride in Old Lyme?
Reservations are due by 4:30pm on the business day before the trip, and you can book up to two weeks ahead. Rides run Monday to Friday from 6:30am to 4:30pm, with a half-hour pickup window. When a ride isn't available, a caregiver can drive your parent.
What can my mother do at the Lymes' Senior Center?
The center serves people 55 and over, with classes, exercise and health programs, lunches and trips. A hot lunch is served Monday to Friday, and she reserves by 11am the day before. A caregiver can help her get ready, take her there and be at the house when she gets home.
How can Old Lyme emergency workers know my father needs help in an emergency?
The town has a Special Needs Registration Form that you fill out and send to Old Lyme Emergency Management. It asks about mobility, vision, oxygen and in-home care, and lists a relative, caregiver or friend as the emergency contact. The information is voluntary and confidential. A caregiver can help you fill it in.
How do families pay for home care?
Care with Endurance is private pay. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare does not pay for ongoing daily help at home.
