Hamden yes, New Haven no
North Haven's bus publishes its geography in one clause: transportation in North Haven and surrounding areas of Hamden only. One named neighbour, and nowhere else.
Hamden is a sensible inclusion. It is immediately adjacent, it has shops and medical practices, and a great many North Haven errands end there. What the clause leaves out is New Haven, which is one town further and holds Yale New Haven Hospital.
So the pattern is precise and slightly cruel: the town's own transport reaches the neighbour it borders and stops short of the hospital its residents are actually discharged from. A follow-up appointment at York Street is not a trip this bus makes.
It is worth knowing that at the point somebody is choosing a consultant rather than at the point they are trying to get to one. A specialist in Hamden is reachable on the town bus. The same specialist in New Haven is a private arrangement, every appointment, for as long as the course runs.
Sixty-two, which is two years further than the neighbours
The age floor here is 62. Hamden's departmental scope is 60. Wallingford's transport is 60. Cheshire's town rides start at 55. Guilford's programme starts at 55.
Two years does not sound like much and it lands on real people. Somebody who is 60 or 61 in North Haven, who has stopped driving after a procedure and who would qualify in any neighbouring town, does not qualify here.

Hairdressers, barbers and nail salons are served only within North Haven, which is another small boundary worth knowing before somebody books an appointment in Hamden expecting a lift to it.
Twenty-four thousand people, and one in five over 65
North Haven has around 24,336 residents and 22.3 per cent of them are over 65. That is a high share for a town of this size and it sits in a suburban road network built almost entirely for driving.
The Joyce C. Budrow Senior Center on Pool Road keeps proper weekday hours, eight until four, five days. That is a real week for somebody who can get there, and getting there is what the bus is for.
What the combination produces is a town where the daytime is well covered and the edges are not. The centre closes at four. The bus does not enter New Haven. Weekends are not published as service days.
Which is a clean description of what a household here actually needs to buy: not company in the middle of a Tuesday, which exists and is free, but the hospital run, the evening, and the week after something happens.

Everything we provide is daily-living. Personal care, bathing, dressing, mobility support and transfers within a caregiver's training, medication reminders, meal preparation, the household routine, companionship, and the New Haven journeys the town bus will not make.
Nothing about the line beyond that is soft. No skilled nursing, no wound care, no injections, no therapy, no medication administration or dose adjustment, and no clinical assessment. Where a clinical plan already exists we work under it rather than directing it.
The most useful thing we tell North Haven families costs nothing: book medical rides early, because three months ahead is allowed and almost nobody uses it. Everything predictable can be locked in before it is urgent.
What is left after that is the hospital, the evening and the fortnight after a discharge. That is a defined arrangement rather than an open-ended one, and it should end when the person is steady.
