New Haven's three senior centers
The city runs three senior centers, open to residents from age 55: Atwater Senior Center at 26 Atwater Street in Fair Haven, Dixwell/Newhallville Senior Center at 197 Dixwell Avenue, and East Shore Senior Center at 350 Woodward Avenue.
A caregiver can help your husband get ready, drive him there and back, and keep him company for the rest of the day.
Rides and paratransit
Greater New Haven Transit District paratransit is for people whose disability keeps them off the regular bus, at any age, and it takes an application. Age alone doesn't qualify anyone, and that's the mix-up we run into most often in New Haven. Rides are booked by 5pm the day before.
A caregiver can drive to appointments, errands and visits as part of the care plan, on the days you choose. What we're for is the hours nothing public covers: the morning, the evening, the weekend, and the two weeks after a discharge when your husband can't manage the stairs yet and no ride can be booked on the day. Questions New Haven families ask
Does my husband qualify for paratransit because of his age?
Age alone doesn't qualify him. Greater New Haven Transit District paratransit is for people whose disability keeps them off the regular bus, and it starts with an application. A caregiver can drive him wherever he needs to go in the meantime.
Can we start with a few hours and add more later?
Yes. The calls we get here tend to be narrower and more specific than the ones from a suburb, because a lot of older residents already have family nearby doing part of the work. You can start with a few mornings or evenings a week and add hours, overnights or live-in care as needs change. Your Care Manager adjusts the plan with you.
What if my husband also needs nursing or therapy?
We handle the daily living side: bathing, dressing, meals, reminders, getting around the house safely. For skilled nursing or physical therapy, Endurance Home Health, our separate company that provides them in Connecticut only, can help, and we coordinate around any clinical team that's already involved.
How do families pay for home care?
Care with Endurance is private pay. If your husband has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare doesn't pay for ongoing daily help at home.
