Getting to appointments from Sherman
The Sherman Senior Center van carries residents 60 and over, and adults with a disability, to the center and to grocery and retail stores. Rides are booked two days ahead. For medical, pharmacy and legal trips, the town points residents to two free volunteer services, FISH of Sherman and the WHEELS Program of Greater New Milford. A town van that doesn't go to the doctor is the single fact that shapes almost every conversation we have here.
A caregiver can drive your parents to an appointment and home again, which in this town is a large part of the value, when the volunteers are booked up or the notice is short. Often that's a standing arrangement just for the appointments that repeat, with help with the shopping and the house on the days in between.
The town van also asks riders to be independent and able to carry their own bags. This is the most common way we see people lose a service they think they still have: nothing is withdrawn and nobody is told, the trips just become harder, then occasional, then stop.

Why does care here cost differently from a town nearer Stamford?
Distance. A short visit with a long drive at either end isn't a sensible thing to sell or to buy, so cover in Sherman is usually arranged in longer blocks and fewer of them. Live-in care and long shifts often work out better here than hourly, and that comes down to distance. It has nothing to do with how much care someone needs. A caregiver who cannot drive cannot work this town.
