Home care in Mountainside

Springfield's municipal bus is open to residents from 55. Union County Paratransit is open from 60. Mountainside's borough van is open from 62. Those three services operate within a few miles of each other and each drew its line in a different place.

The consequence for a Mountainside household is specific and easy to miss. A resident aged 60 or 61 is eligible for county paratransit, with its six-day booking rule, and is not eligible for the borough van sitting outside their own municipal building. They have the slower option and not the faster one.

Nobody designed that. It is what happens when three separate bodies each set a sensible threshold for their own budget. But a family who has helped a parent in Springfield, or read the county's eligibility page, will assume the borough van works the same way, and it does not.

So the first thing to establish here is a date of birth against three different rulebooks. It takes a minute and it changes what the rest of the plan has to cover.

The borough van runs Monday and Thursday, 9.30am to 2.30pm. That is two days and a five-hour window, which is a real service and a narrow one.

What the borough does not publish anywhere is how far ahead to book it. Neither the Senior Services page nor the Transportation page gives a lead time, a cut-off, or a same-day policy. The instruction is simply that reservations are required.

An unstated rule is harder to plan around than a long one. With Union County's six days you can at least work backwards. With no published window a family cannot tell whether Friday's call is early enough for Monday, and the only way to find out is to ring and ask, which is worth doing once, before anything is needed, and writing down.

Everything outside those two days falls to county paratransit and its six-day requirement. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday are not covered by the borough at all, which is a lot of week for a household whose appointments do not fall conveniently.

Mountainside has no standalone senior centre. What it has is a Senior Lounge and a Community Room inside Borough Hall on Route 22, opened in 2018, along with a fitness room on its own separate timetable.

That is not a criticism. A well-used room inside a municipal building is worth more than an empty building somewhere else, and the hours are decent: 10.30 to 4, five days a week. But it does mean the provision here is a facility rather than a programme, and the programme sits on top of it.

The programme is Mountainside Active Retirees, which meets the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, ten until noon, September through May. It does not meet in June, July or August.

Read that as an operational fact rather than a scheduling detail. For somebody whose social week is built around a fortnightly meeting, summer removes it entirely, and the months when family are away on holiday are the same months the structure disappears. That is when we get called, and it is predictable enough to plan for in May rather than discover in July.

Mountainside has around 7,049 residents and 24.2 per cent of them are over 65, which is one of the highest shares in our New Jersey coverage. Its median home dates to 1957.

Post-war construction of that period is a mixed inheritance. Wider stairs than pre-war stock and often a bathroom on the entry floor, which helps. But 1957 in this part of Union County also means split-levels and capes, where four steps between the bedroom and the bathroom never register as stairs to anybody counting them, and a cape's single steep run to bedrooms in the roof fits a stairlift in some houses and not others.

Overlook Medical Center in Summit is close, which makes discharges quick and follow-ups short. It does nothing about the first weekend home, when the borough van does not run, the lounge is shut, and county paratransit needed booking six days before anybody knew there would be a discharge.

That weekend is the single most requested arrangement we run in this borough, and it is a short one. Cover the days either side, review, and stop when the person is steady.

Everything we provide is daily-living. Personal care, bathing, dressing, mobility support and transfers within a caregiver's training, medication reminders, meal preparation, the household routine, companionship, and the journeys that fall on the three days the borough van does not run.

Nothing about the line beyond that is soft. No skilled nursing, no wound care, no injections, no therapy, no medication administration or dose adjustment, and no clinical assessment. Where a clinical plan already exists we work under it rather than directing it.

We will also tell you when a free service covers what you were about to buy. If the appointments fall on a Monday or a Thursday and the person is over 62, the borough van does the job at no cost, and saying so is more use to you than taking the booking.

And where the nights are the problem rather than the days, live-in care and awake overnight cover are different services at very different prices. Choosing between them from a description rather than a week of evidence is the most expensive mistake families make.
