The borough van and the Senior Lounge
Mountainside's borough van runs on Mondays and Thursdays from 9:30am to 2:30pm for residents 62 and over, by reservation. The Senior Lounge and Community Room at Borough Hall on Route 22 is open on weekdays, and Mountainside Active Retirees meets there from September through May.
A caregiver can cover the other days: rides to appointments and errands, company in the summer months when the club takes a break, and help at home whenever you need it. The summer break is when we get called, and it's predictable enough to plan for in May instead of discovering it in July.
The first weekend home
After a hospital stay, the first weekend home falls when the borough van doesn't run and the lounge is shut. That weekend is the single most requested arrangement we run in this borough, and it's a short one. Cover the days on either side, check in, and stop once your parent is steady.
If a clinical plan already exists, we work under it.

Questions Mountainside families ask
My mother is 61. Can she use the Mountainside van?
The borough van is for residents 62 and over. Union County Paratransit starts at 60 and needs six days' notice. A caregiver can drive her in the meantime.
What days does the borough van run?
Mondays and Thursdays, 9:30am to 2:30pm, by reservation through Senior Services. It's worth calling once to ask how far ahead to book.
Can we start with a few hours and add more later?
Yes. You can start with a few mornings or evenings a week and add hours, overnights or live-in care as needs change. Your Care Manager adjusts the plan with you.
How do families pay for home care?
Care with Endurance is private pay. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare doesn't pay for ongoing daily help at home. Cost depends on the hours, the kind of care and the support needed. Ask on the first call and you'll get a real range.
