Home care in New Providence

New Providence has 13,727 residents and 3,181 of them are aged 65 or over. At 23.2 per cent that is the highest proportion of any town in our New Jersey coverage, ahead of Alpine at 21.5 and well ahead of Maplewood at 11.8.

A borough where nearly a quarter of residents are over 65 has a different texture from one where the figure is one in eight. The senior centre on East Fourth Street is a genuine civic institution here rather than a service on a list. Neighbours are more likely to be in a similar position, which cuts both ways: there is more mutual understanding and there are fewer younger neighbours available to help with a ladder or a lift.

It also means a great many households here are managing well and quietly, and have been for years. The care conversation in New Providence often starts later than it should, not through denial but because the arrangement genuinely was working until a specific thing changed.

Union County Paratransit is a real service and a good one. It runs curb-to-curb anywhere in the county for residents aged 60 and over, Monday to Friday between 7:30am and 5:30pm, and it covers medical trips, nutrition, shopping, employment, recreation and rail connections.

It also requires reservations at least six days in advance, and accepts them up to three weeks out. That single condition decides what it can and cannot be used for, and it is published by the county rather than hidden.

Six days works for a standing cardiology appointment booked in March. It cannot work for a discharge on Thursday, a follow-up moved forward, a specialist who has had a cancellation, or a Monday when somebody simply cannot manage the stairs to the car. Anything that arises inside a week is outside the service by design.

That is the specific, checkable gap private hours fill in this borough, and it is a narrower claim than agencies usually make. We are not better than county paratransit. We are available on Tuesday for something you found out about on Monday, and available at six in the evening and on a Saturday, which paratransit is not.

The median New Providence home was built in 1962, which in this part of Union County very often means a split level or a bi-level: half a flight up to the bedrooms, half a flight down to a family room and the laundry, and a landing at the front door.

Split levels are the most awkward common house type for reduced mobility, and the reason is not the total number of stairs. It is that there is no single floor on which a person can live. Bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and laundry sit on three different levels, so a day that would need one flight in a colonial needs four or five short ones here.

That geometry is usually what determines the hours rather than any diagnosis. A household in a split level often needs help at both ends of the day, morning and evening, rather than one longer block, because the difficulty is distributed across the day rather than concentrated in the first twenty minutes.

Our assessment walks all of it, including the half flight to the laundry that nobody mentions on the phone and everybody uses twice a week. A plan written from a description of a split level is reliably the wrong plan.
