The Bethel senior van, and the trips around it
The Bethel Senior Center runs a van for residents 60 and over and adults with a disability, booked at least 24 hours ahead, to medical appointments, shopping and social trips in Bethel, Danbury and Brookfield. The town's newsletter adds two rules: riders need to get to the curb on their own, and the van doesn't take anyone to a procedure. Residents 65 and over can also use HARTransit's SweetHART Dial-A-Ride, which runs here Monday to Friday.
The curb rule is the one people stop meeting gradually, and it's the most common way we see a service disappear without anybody deciding to withdraw it. A caregiver can help where the van stops: getting ready and down to the curb, a ride to a procedure and home again afterward, or a meal and some company once she's back. Tell us the regular trips when we talk, and we'll plan the hours around them.
Day to day, our caregivers help with personal care, bathing, dressing, mobility support and transfers within a caregiver's training, medication reminders, meal preparation, the household routine and companionship. Where a clinical plan already exists, we work alongside it.
