Companion care in North Salem

Of the 5,148 people living in North Salem, 1,152 are aged 65 or over. That is 22.4 per cent, the highest proportion of any town in our Westchester coverage and well above White Plains at 20.5 per cent or Harrison at 13.2 per cent.

Proportion matters more than headcount in a place this size. A town of five thousand where one in five residents is over 65 does not have the service density that a city of sixty thousand can support, because the same share of a much smaller number does not fund a daily senior centre, a full paratransit route, or a hospital. What it produces instead is a lot of households, spread out, each of which is quietly managing on its own.

This is also a town where a great many people intend to stay put and have organised their lives around doing so. For companion care, the question is whether a scheduled non-hands-on visit can be reached reliably through the winter and whether the household has a backup when it cannot.

Bee-Line ParaTransit is the county's shared-ride service for people who cannot use the regular buses. It has two conditions, and both are published rather than hidden: it operates only within three quarters of a mile of a regular Bee-Line route, and only during the hours that route is in service.

In White Plains that is a footnote, because the routes converge there. In North Salem it is the central fact of the matter. A significant share of the town sits outside the three-quarter-mile band, and for those households county paratransit is not a partial answer or an inconvenient one. It is simply unavailable.

The practical consequence is that transport stops being a service somebody books and becomes a job somebody does. Getting to an appointment in Mount Kisco, a shop, or the senior programme on Deveau Road is a car journey with a driver every time, and there is no public fallback if the usual driver is unavailable.

If reliable access cannot be maintained, or if the need extends beyond non-hands-on companionship, we would rather decline than make a promise the geography cannot support.

The median North Salem home was built in 1963, and in this town that generally means a house on a plot rather than a house on a street. Long private drives, gravel or asphalt, unlit, with the parking some distance from the door.

From December to March that changes what an early start means. The distance between a car and a front door is where a great many falls happen, and it is a distance that in North Salem is measured in dozens of yards rather than a few steps.
