Companion care in Katonah

The median Katonah home was built in 1948. That places its housing among the oldest in our Westchester coverage, though Bronxville's 1938 median is earlier, and it describes a specific kind of interior.

A house of that vintage has a narrow staircase, often with a turn in it, and a banister on one side only. The bathroom is on the first floor above ground and the bath is a bath rather than a level-access shower. Doorways are narrower than modern ones, which matters the first time somebody needs a frame or a chair. Basements have steps down to the laundry.

None of that is a defect. These are good houses and people are attached to them for excellent reasons. But they were built for a household that could take stairs without thinking about them, and the first thing that becomes hard in a Katonah house is almost always the staircase, not the person.

That route has to be understood before companion care begins. A turn in a staircase with a rail on one side is different from a straight run with rails on both, and if safe movement depends on somebody lifting, steadying or transferring the person, New York companion care is not the right service.

Of the 2,176 people the census counts in Katonah, 276 are aged 65 or over. That is 12.7 per cent, the lowest share in our Westchester set and well under North Salem at 22.4 per cent or White Plains at 20.5.

Katonah is, in other words, a young family village with a small older population inside it. That produces a specific and easily missed situation. Community life here organises around schools, sports and the school calendar, and an older resident who has stopped driving is not so much excluded as not the assumed participant.

Isolation in a busy village is a different thing from isolation in a rural one, and it is harder to see. A parent in North Salem who has stopped going out is obviously alone. A parent in Katonah is surrounded by activity that is not for them, on a main street they can no longer easily reach, and the family often reads the surrounding busyness as company.

This is why a scheduled companion visit can be a useful first step in Katonah: conversation, a shared activity or accompaniment into the village can restore a reason to leave the house without pretending to provide hands-on support.

Katonah is a hamlet within the Town of Bedford. It has a station, a main street and a distinct identity that long predates the current arrangement, and it has no government of its own. Roads, services and the senior programme are Bedford's.

That programme is at 21 Park Avenue in Bedford Hills. For a Katonah resident it is a car journey, which means the town's own published provision is available in practice mainly to people who can still drive or who have somebody to drive them.

County paratransit fills part of that gap and only part. Bee-Line runs within three quarters of a mile of a regular route and only while that route is in service, which works near the hamlet centre and along Route 117 and does not work for the houses set back on the lanes, which is most of them.

So the honest summary for Katonah is that the public provision is real and it is a drive away. Appointment or activity accompaniment may be the most useful companion-care task here, provided the person does not need physical assistance getting there.
