Care options in Pelham
Companion care, on the schedule you need
In New York we provide companion care only, and it can run by the hour, overnight, live-in or around the clock. That means company, meals, light housekeeping, errands, rides to appointments and regular updates for the family. Tell us what the days and nights are like and we’ll talk through the schedule with you.
- Hourly careHelp for the hours that are hardest, from a few mornings a week to full days. Easy to add to as needs change.
- Overnight careA caregiver who stays awake through the night hours, there when someone wakes and ready to help them settle again, so everyone in the house gets some rest.
- Live-in careA caregiver lives in the home and helps through the day with meals, routines, company and the house. Agreed rest time, including a night's sleep, is part of the arrangement.
- 24-hour careCaregivers work awake shifts, usually two 12-hour or three 8-hour shifts, so someone is up and ready to help at any hour of the day or night.
A week at the Daronco Town House
The Town holds all of its programs for residents 55 and over at the Daronco Town House on Fifth Avenue. The Senior Citizen Club meets on Mondays from 1 to 4pm. Senior Exercise, stretching and low-impact aerobics done sitting or standing, runs on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 10, cards and Mahjong fill Wednesday and Friday afternoons, and a yoga class meets on Friday mornings.
A companion can build the rest of the week around it: a ride to the Town House and home again, lunch together afterward, light housekeeping and errands, and company in the evenings and at weekends, outside the program hours.
The medical van, and the trips it doesn't make
Pelham's senior medical van takes seniors to doctors, dentists, clinics and hospitals in Pelham, New Rochelle, Larchmont, Eastchester, Bronxville and Mount Vernon, and to parts of Scarsdale and Yonkers. It runs Monday to Wednesday from 9:15am to 3pm, except holidays. Rides are for medical visits only, they're booked 24 hours ahead, and riders need to get in and out of the van without assistance.
A companion can drive on Thursdays and Fridays, on short notice, or to places outside the van's area, and stay with your mother through the appointment. Shopping and errands, which the van isn't for, fit into the same visit.

Credentials and recognition
Questions Pelham families ask
Does the Town of Pelham have programs for older residents?
Yes. The Town's programs for residents 55 and over all meet at the Daronco Town House, 20 Fifth Avenue: the Senior Citizen Club on Monday afternoons, exercise classes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, cards on Wednesday and Friday afternoons and yoga on Friday mornings. Check current schedules with the Town.
Will the Pelham medical van take my mother to the doctor?
It can, Monday to Wednesday between 9:15am and 3pm, if the ride is booked 24 hours ahead and she can get in and out of the van on her own. It's for medical visits only. On other days, or when you'd like someone with her at the appointment, a companion can drive her and stay through the visit.
What is Pelham's R.E.A.L. list?
The Resident Emergency Assistance List is being put together by the Pelham and Pelham Manor Police Department and the Town of Pelham. It holds contact information for seniors and residents with special needs in the Villages of Pelham and Pelham Manor, so they can be contacted to check on their well-being during storms and power emergencies. A companion can also stay through the night when bad weather is coming.
Can a companion help my father keep reading?
Yes. Pelham Public Library at 530 Colonial Avenue keeps a large print collection for adults, mostly bestselling fiction, and cardholders can borrow eBooks and audiobooks at home through the Libby app. A companion can pick up and return his books, or help him get started with Libby on a tablet.
How do families pay for companion care?
Care with Endurance is private pay. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy, we can help with the policy paperwork. Medicare doesn't pay for ongoing daily help at home.
