Companion Care vs Personal Care
They overlap more than families expect, and the difference is whether hands go on your parent.
Companion care
Company, meals, homemaking, errands, transportation, reminders.
Personal care
Bathing, dressing, grooming, and similar daily tasks.
Companion care covers company, homemaking, errands, and reminders, while personal care adds hands-on help with bathing, dressing, and grooming; Endurance Home Care provides both as distinct daily-living services.
One list is about the day. The other list is about the body.
Neither list is medical. Endurance Home Care provides care at home in Connecticut and New Jersey, with companion care only in New York. Skilled nursing, home health aides and physical therapy in Connecticut are provided by Endurance Home Health. A caregiver supports, accompanies, reminds, and supervises, and does not treat, diagnose, or assess anyone.
Endurance names Companion Care and Personal Care as two separate services, which is the first useful thing to know here: you are choosing a scope, not a company, and the scope is meant to change later without anything else changing with it. Personal care serves Connecticut and New Jersey; New York service is companion care only. If the question underneath yours is whether either of these is nursing, that is a different comparison and it is drawn out in how home care differs from home health care. For the longer version of the companionship side, start with our plain guide to companion care.
Where the line actually falls
| Where it shows up | Companion care | Personal care |
|---|---|---|
| The day | Company and conversation, meals, and homemaking. | The same day, with hands-on help inside it. |
| Leaving the house | Errands and transportation. | Help getting dressed and ready to go. |
| Keeping track | Reminders through the day. | Reminders continue, unchanged. |
| The body | Not part of this service. | Bathing, dressing, grooming, and similar daily tasks. |
Neither service is medical care
When companionship is enough
Companionship carries the week while the difficulty is the day rather than the body. Somebody is alone for long stretches and it is starting to show. Meals have quietly become toast. The mail is stacking up, the car keys have already been handed over, and appointments are being missed rather than refused. Company, a driver, a cooked meal, and a reminder settle most of that, and none of it asks anyone to put a hand on your parent. For the hour by hour version of that work, see what a companion caregiver does.
When the plan needs hands on it
The line moves once getting through the day depends on getting through the bathroom. A shower skipped because it has become frightening. The same clothes two days running because buttons have gotten slow. Grooming quietly abandoned. That is personal care, and company is not a substitute for it. Families tend to notice the shift there before they notice it anywhere else. If you are still reading the room, signs your parent may need more help walks through what to watch.
One schedule, without switching agencies
The two lists are separate on paper and rarely separate in a household. In Connecticut and New Jersey, schedule types run from hourly care through 24/7 care and live-ins, and the service mix inside any of them is a setting rather than a commitment. New York service is companion care only.
One schedule, both lists
Because both services are named and staffed under one roof, the mix inside a schedule can move without the household moving. A week that starts as company, meals, and errands can add hands-on personal care from Endurance later in Connecticut and New Jersey, and often the caregiver already in the house is the one who adds it. New York service is companion care only.
Start where the need is
The list you begin with is whichever one the household is actually short on. Neither is a prerequisite for the other.
By the hour
Schedules begin at hourly care, a few hours at the times of day that are hardest to cover.
Around the clock
In Connecticut and New Jersey, the same schedule types run up through 24/7 care, in shifts, when a household cannot leave the hours uncovered. New York service is companion care only.
Live-in coverage
Live-ins sit at the far end of the same range in Connecticut and New Jersey. New York service is companion care only.
Reviewed monthly
The care plan is reviewed on a customized monthly cadence, which is the mechanism that changes the mix as needs grow.
Cost, plainly
The published Connecticut figures do not split companion care from personal care at all, which is itself the answer: the service label is rarely what moves a bill. One rate band covers home care, and the hours inside it are what change the number.
Those are market figures, not an Endurance price list. What actually drives a bill is hours per week: four afternoons is a different number from overnight coverage. A household quote is confirmed only after the team reviews the location, schedule, care needs, and any insurance documentation. For independent planning context, see what home care costs.

what is the difference between companion care and personal care
Companion care is daily-living support around the person: company, meals, homemaking, errands, transportation, and reminders. Personal care adds hands-on help with the body: bathing, dressing, grooming, and similar daily tasks. Neither is medical care. Endurance Home Care provides both as separate named services and often blends them in one schedule as needs grow.
Can the same caregiver provide both companion care and personal care?
Often, yes. Because Endurance Home Care offers both services, a schedule can start as companionship and homemaking and add hands-on personal care later without changing agencies, and frequently without changing caregivers. The care plan, reviewed through customized monthly assessments, decides the mix.
Does personal care cost more than companion care?
In Connecticut the published medians sit close together: $37 to $42 per hour for home care per the Long Term Care Navigator 2026 state tables. The bigger cost driver is usually hours per week, not the service type. For a quote built on your actual schedule, call (203) 936-6847.
