Chris Weldon, founder of Stamford-based Endurance Home Care, wrote on why Western Europeans routinely outlive Americans while their countries spend roughly a third as much per person on health care, and on what families here can do about it without waiting for the system to change.

“If you spend time looking at global health metrics, a glaring paradox stares you in the face. Across Western Europe, people routinely live longer, healthier lives than Americans, yet European nations achieve this while spending roughly one-third of the cost per person compared with the United States.”

What the column argues

  • Food quality, daily movement and social cohesion carry more of Europe's longevity advantage than any single piece of medical technology. The column puts chronic loneliness on a par with smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
  • European primary care is built for interception rather than intervention. A persistent symptom gets seen that week, before it becomes a catastrophic emergency.
  • American commercial insurance routes 30 to 50 percent of every premium dollar into administration, prior authorization and margin, while medical cost trends run close to double digits.
  • Families can pair a high-deductible or catastrophic plan with a Health Savings Account, and look at life insurance carrying a long-term care rider.
  • When independent living gets difficult, home care, including live-in and around-the-clock care, keeps aging adults in their own routines and connected to their communities.
